Art Giser will be speaking again at this year’s London Mind, Body Spirit festival.  The festival is a celebration of human potential and the 2013 Festival is already poised to be the biggest and best yet.

Addiction takes over people’s lives, and can often destroy families and relationships as well as individuals. Addiction of any kind can be defined by two criteria: you lose control or have difficulty controlling how much of a substance you use (commonly alcohol and drug abuse); and you continue using the substance even though you are aware of the negative effects and often drastic impact it has on your life.

Psychological illnesses and various forms of trauma very often underlie addictions, so it is important to fully understand the causes of addictions in order to treat them. Addictions manifest themselves as behavioural or substance related dependencies that harmfully affect the body and mind.

Physical additions mean that the body can no longer function normally without the substance, and severe withdrawal symptoms begin affecting the individual if the habit is even temporarily broken. While feeding the addiction, the body can become tolerant to the drug and the individual may experience a diminished effect, encouraging the person to use the substance more often or in higher doses.

An individual who uses drugs habitually will experience long-term changes to the central nervous system. The brain can become sensitised to drugs, and neurologically adapts so that it develops a compulsive attraction to the substance. Addictive substances such as alcohol, opiates, nicotine and marijuana cause the brain to release dopamine, which creates a temporary feeling of happiness, excitement or relaxation. Continuous dopamine stimulation leads the brain to release less dopamine naturally, meaning that the individual must consume increasing quantities of the substance to experience the same effect.

Behavioural or mental addictions frequently cause the person to experience anxiety, pain, depression and mood swings when they are denied access to a substance or cannot do a certain thing (alcohol abuse, gambling, sex addiction).

Hallucinogens can lead an individual to experience hallucinations, panic, paranoia, tremors, and an increased heart rate, while sedatives – when abused – can cause disorientation and slurred speech. Nicotine is known for causing lung cancer, and contributes to hundreds of thousands of deaths a year. Caffeine and other stimulants, taken in addictive quantities, can cause diarrhoea, headaches, nausea, and shakes.

Thought Field Therapy
